Softwood Plywood

Softwood plywood is a plywood laminated with softwood veneers on both faces of the plywood sheet. Its core veneers could be hardwood veneers and it can still be called softwood plywood because of the appearance.

The most common used softwood veneers are connifer species radiata pine, agathis pine, larch pine.

There are differeng grades for the pine faces. The grades can be BB/CC or CDX. In terms of plywood strength, there are non-structural plywood and structural plywood which are manufactured with under very different conditions.

Unlike hardwood, the softwood are mainly used in the building such as walls, roofing, subfloor, and so on.

Softwood For Plywood

In China, softwood plywood are manufactured with imported coniferous veneers like radiata pine, larch and agathis for economic reasons. China has its own softwood veneer such as Mongolica Scotch Pine veneer. But radiata pine is the cheapest as China is a large importer of radiata pine logs from Pacific countries. Larch has been popular for its decorative patterns and the larch veneers are mainly sourced from Russia.

Softwood plywood are defined by its face veneers. Its core veneers can also be hardwood such as poplar and eucalyptus.

Structural and Non-structural Pine Plywood

Structural (CDX Plywood)

C/D grade pine veneers on both faces also called CDX plywood. Construction uses.

Structural pine plywood features a higher stress grade and WBP phenolic bond. It has less requirement on the face veneer quality so the C or D grade pine veneers are used in the production of structural pine ply. CDX plywood is a pine structural ply. Because of the WBP glue used, structural plywood is weather and water boiling proof.

Non-structural

non-structural radiata pine plywood
B/C grade pine veneers for decorative purposes. Furniture and decor uses.

Non-structural plywood is normal plywood that doesn’t have a high stress grade. It is not used for house structure so its strength doesn’t have to be very high. Its face veneers are better quality because it might be used for architectural or furniture.
